Dig this bizarre TV recording of The Piano has been Drinking from mock TV show Fernwood 2Nite. The hosts are really actors (Martin Mull and Fred Willard) and the action takes place in the imaginary town of Fernwood, Ohio. Waits pulls off a good deal of vintage hobo-esque one liners: "I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy" and later, about his meal at a dodgy greasy spoon "I didn't know whether to eat mine or give it a ride home".
