Desktop Linux: Still for geeks

David Weinberger is checking out life
as a Linux novice and he is struggling. Of course. Weinbergers expectations for how things are supposed to work are failing in ways he does not even begin to capture in the post.

  • Filesharing with windows is not 'on by default' and does not do autodiscover by default.
  • Installing applications routinely means actually building the application. So you have to be sure to get RPM's not source
  • RPM's don't magically double-click install (I think - I don't use desktop Linux but only command line Linux)

In short Linux is still rather geeky stuff.
