Even the APIs are below the API

When Github ended it's life as an independent company and became just a product in Microsoft's AI business last fall it all seemed a bit premature - Github an AI product? Why cannibalise the single most important source code platform on the planet like that?

When you look at it now - it looks like MSFT was not early but more likely late - misjudging the AI typhoon... and it looks like all the moves made to turn Github into the leading AI development platform have utterly failed.

I haven't heard even one person mention Copilot as an interesting platform in 2026. And at the same time - Github's entire legacy product workflow is falling apart under the load of AI-generated code.

Predicting where the water goes in a rainstorm has always been very very hard.

It's APIs all the way up

It's all part of a bigger picture where the world has been turned weirdly upside down. A few years ago when large SaaS businesses seemed to rule the world and new verticals kept getting SaaS'ed - the software version of financial securitization - we started talking a lot about whether you were above the API or below the API - in the sense of whether you were one of the makers of the ecosystem or subject to the ecosystem.

Depending a little bit on who said it this could be either critical thinking or horrible macho bullshit in the vein of "main character" or Bush-era "reality based community"

That world is disappearing as software itself dissolves. Even massive platform companies in SaaS find themselves below the AI API. Who would have thought that mighty Apple and Microsoft would see themselves clientized to such a degree owning - after all - the primary experience for some 50%

I don't really think software is going anywhere but where the walls and the moats are is fundamentally changing and literally no one has figured that out yet.
